This page is where I post poems I have written and some of my favorites by other writers. Most of my poems just come to me at certain points in time. I can't seem to generate creativity on demand. These poems are deeply personal and are about my family or important events in my life. I often include a note about the circumstances that prompted each poem at the bottom of the post.

The Planet with a Heart. I am not wise or learned, of things about the sky. They say you’re not a planet, and I can’t imagine why. The fact that you’re a perfect sphere, is plain for all to see. Three billion miles away from here, through a camera called LORRI. The fact you orbit ‘round the sun, was never in dispute. But you fail to clear yourself a path, and so the ill repute. Cousins All Are We

Cousins All Are We With Eve as our mother, Cousins all are we. Mother, father, sister, brother, In our shared humanity. One blood, one race, one people, From pole to pole the same. Let the bells ring from the steeple, That we all bear Adam’s name. With Adam as our father, Sinners all are we. So when I judge my brother, Judgment falls right back on me. The billions dead in battle. Are the blood of brothers slain. From the eating of the apple, And good Abel killed by Cain. With Jesus as our Savior, Forgiven all are we. But we don’t deserve his favor, Even though it is for free. We must take His love inside us. We must claim it as our own. Let no one then deride us. As we bow before His throne. A New Life in a New Year

A New Life in a New Year This time of year, many of us take time to reflect on the past and make plans for the future. Sometimes we say we will lose weight, exercise more, spend more time with family, give up bad habits, and so forth. I would like to do all those things and more.  But as I look over previous years, I find that resolutions are hard to keep, and I often give up too soon. The problem is, I try to do things in my own strength and my own wisdom instead of in the strength and wisdom that God provides. As we go into this new year, let us pray for God's strength and read the scriptures to gain God's wisdom. Proverbs 3:5-6 says: Trust in the Lord with all your heart,     and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him,     and he will make straight your paths. Kathy's Crown Dearest Kathy robed in white, Singing with the angels bright, Taking off your well earned crown, At Jesus' feet to lay it down. Priceless jewels reflect the splendor Of a life of full surrender To the King who came to serve And give us grace we don't deserve. Diamonds yield a pure rainbow Of humble deeds performed below, Without a thought of crowns above, A life of sacrificial love. Rubies are a deep dark red, Like the blood that Jesus shed; Upon her bed of suffering She never stopped her mothering. Emeralds are a splendid green, Her joy and kindness clearly seen; And even when the leaves turn brown, She never let it get her down. Sapphires are a brilliant blue, The sky above is in their hue; To Heaven at last our spirits rise, Our home forever in the skies. Freedom in Christ

It wasn’t long after Karen asked me to do the meditation for this service, that an outline began to form in my head. The day before Mom passed away, I had been listening to the old negro spiritual: “Steal away, steal away, steal away home to Jesus. “Steal away, steal away, steal way home. I ain’t got long to be here. I thought about how Mom went home peacefully, like sneaking out of the nursing home without triggering the alarm. But I also remembered how this was a song sung by slaves who were telling their family and friends that they were planning to escape that night. Today we are going to talk about how faith in the resurrection of Jesus sets us free, both in this life and in the life to come. What is the Gospel?
